Who should and when to apply:
MBAs are both postgraduate and post-experience qualifications.
While as most universities now offer MBAs, most
reputable institutions have some tough conditions
for entry. Typically, it is those individuals who
have made significant career progression for at
least a couple of years after their first degree
that may be best placed to enroll. The idea is that
such applicants should have an in-depth knowledge
of either a function or role in a specific industry
or sector.
Universities in Europe and America tend to bend
the rules a bit when dealing with international
applicants. However, recent graduates are better
advised to either get some grounding in a particular
employment sector, undertake a professional qualification
like CIMA, or undertake a specialist Master's degree
for those who still see a long-term career in the
academia. East Africa's biggest Business School
, the Makerere University Business School , even
conducts test sessions and interviews for its MBA
applicants.
Many industries today do not view an MBA as a desirable
attribute but an essential qualification. Careers
in Consulting, Finance, and top level executive positions
are increasingly becoming a reserve of MBAs. Indeed,
many blue chip companies not only insist on an MBA
qualification, they have also selectively listed the
particular Business Schools from which they recruit.
Even the Home Office's MBA Scheme for those who want
to live and wok in the UK is carefully crafted to
include only particular Business Schools world-wide,
although adjustments have been made to their list
since. The Exquisite Solution team brings you a list
of the top 50 Business Schools here in the UK on the

The World’s
top 50 Universities (The 2005 Shangai Jiao Tong
rankings):
The Shangai Jiao Tong university ranking was
first introduced in 2003 and remains one of
the most trusted and the most prestigious ranking
for institutions of higher education worldwide.
The ranking is based on a wide range of criteria,
including academic and research performance
as well as the number of alumni and staff winning
Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals.
The list is still dominated by American Universities
who take up more than 50% of all the places.
This may partly be attributed to the size of
the country and its economic muscle, with universities
like Harvard attracting an endowment to the
tune of $23billion in a single year, far bigger
than the economy of an average African statse.
Notably and regrettably, no single African institution
has so far sniffed at the list.

Not very good reading for our partners in Africa
is the fact that Africa only has three places
in the World’s top 500 Universities, all
of them South Africa based. The the top-most
slot is claimed by Africa’s (and the RSA’s)
number one university - The University of Cape
Town - which ranks 245th, followed by the University
of Zulu Natal in the 471st position and the
University of Pretoria in the 482nd position.
FUNDING FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDY ABROAD:
Postgraduate study comes along with enormous
challenges, from family commitments (in the
case of mature students), home sickness for
those studying abroad, to the rigors of adapting
to a new culture and style of life. Nothing
is challenging as the burden of mobilizing the
necessary funding, which amount is normally
triple the home rate of fees.
It is this concern over fees that has aroused
the most questions from Exquisite Solution’s
inquirers. It is our remit to try to advise
on such issues that seem consensual to both
our clients and the general public.
The general position on the matter is there
is no ordinary source of funding for postgraduate
study in almost all universities around the
globe. In the United Kingdom for example, any
such availability varies widely both between
Home/ EU students and International students;
Part-time and Full-time students; and between
subject disciplines and research areas.
Home students are the more favoured, with local
authorities providing Career Development Loans.
Grants are also attainable from the Research
Councils to help students in covering tuition
costs. Contact your local authority for full
advice on the available opportunities.
International students however find it incredibly
difficult to access such funding. Those intending
to undertake graduate studies here are well
advised to secure enough funding before taking
the decision to enroll abroad.
There are some funding opportunities availed
by particular universities for students either
undertaking specific courses or from particular
countries. Likewise, funds may be secured if
you demonstrate satisfactory progress on your
course and are faced with difficulties in the
last stages of your course. Find
out more on such funding, to see if you qualify.
In the United States and Canada, graduate scholarships,
bursaries, grants and fellowships are provided
for by the particular university. Most of these
universities do not require a separate application
for scholarships or other financial support.
Availability of scholarships is also regularly
advertised at www.guardian.co.uk/courses
Top Universities also have a tendency to “cream-scheme”
by shopping around for students who show exemplary
academic merit. Holders of first class degrees
normally secure funding that caters for their
full tuition cost as well as (in most cases)
receiving a monthly stipend towards their living
expenses.
An Overseas student? Looking to supplement your
income? Try part-time (supply) teaching
Don’t get lost in the maze; supplement
your finances through supply teaching. One of
the most daunting tasks faced by international
students is finding work to help them supplement
their finances. This is despite having the right
to work for a maximum number of hours depending
on the immigration laws of a particular country.
This has always resulted in frustration, forcing
students to work as cleaners, door-men, taxi
drivers, carers, etc. Not only is this demoralizing
for someone who in most cases is a holder of
degree qualifications, it is highly draining
yet the pay is minimal.
No employment offers more challenge and reward
than teaching. Taking the United Kingdom where
students are allowed to work for a maximum of
20 hours per week for example, teaching only
requires you to work for 3 days but pays you
handsomely. This is how.
A normal teaching day lasts between 9:15am to
3:30pm max (depending on a particular school
– both primary and secondary). For work
done during these hours, you expect to earn
between £120 and £130 per day! This
works out at about £1200 a month (after
tax), much more than what one needs for the
rather high cost of living in cities like London.
It is no cake just talking of teaching. One
ought to be aware of the challenges involved.
But because others have and still do it, you
too can. And, you do not have to be a teacher
to do it. Various avenues exist as the Exquisite
Solution Team would tell you.
Exquisite Solution has researched all the major
teaching Agencies in the United Kingdom and
is proud to bring you the list as you start
your exciting adventure into teaching. Contact
